Volume five · English explanations

Nederlands C1 — the level
where correct stops
being the point.

B2 was measured in errors. C1 is measured in choices: which of six verbs for “said”, which particle carries your stance, whether the sentence should be sixty words or four. Fifty-six days on the things nobody corrects for you — collocation, density, register, and the Dutch of teaching, supervision, intervisie and the promotieverdediging.

Say the Dutch out loud from the English before you flip — recognition is not recall. Mark anything you produced correctly but slowly as hard: at a counter, slow is wrong.

Each scene has an outcome: a job, a prescription, a repair, a place in a school. Read your side out loud, then cover the Dutch and rebuild it from the English.

Dagen 42–50 · certificering

There is no Dutch C1 state exam. Here is what there is instead.

Staatsexamen NT2 tops out at B2 (Programma II), so above it the landscape is small: CNaVT Profiel Academische Taalvaardigheid and Profiel Professionele Taalvaardigheid, university language-centre assessments, and — for a foreign-trained psychologist — the AKV-toets, which is not a CEFR certificate but is the exam that decides whether you may practise. Verify current requirements with CNaVT, DUO and BIG-register/CIBG. Sixteen mock items below. 🎯

After C1

C1 opens the lecture hall and the caseload. C2 changes what people assume about you.

With C1 you can teach, chair, supervise, write advice and carry a Dutch-language caseload. C2 is a different claim: that you write Dutch a Dutch reader would be pleased to have written. That is rhythm, phraseology and the discipline of cutting — which is exactly what volume six is.

Write, then delete a quarter
The single fastest C1→C2 exercise. Style is what survives cutting, and Dutch rewards compression more than most written cultures.
Collect phrasemes, not words
One fixed block a week — ter discussie staan, van meet af aan — written into a real sentence of your own.
Drill, don't reread
Fifteen minutes in het Taallab beats an hour of rereading — see the psychology module for why.
