Nederlands B1 — the level
the Netherlands
actually asks for.
B1 is the inburgering standard, the door to Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I, and the point at which Dutch colleagues stop switching to English out of kindness. Forty-nine days on word order you steer rather than memorise, opinions you can defend, the vaste voorzetsels that otherwise keep you wrong forever — and your first Dutch conversations about your own work.

Say the Dutch out loud from the English before you flip — recognition is not recall. Mark anything you produced correctly but slowly as hard: at a counter, slow is wrong.

Each scene has an outcome: a job, a prescription, a repair, a place in a school. Read your side out loud, then cover the Dutch and rebuild it from the English.
Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I — modular, one part at a time
Programma I certifies Dutch at roughly B1: Lezen, Luisteren, Schrijven, Spreken, computer-based, booked and passed one part at a time, with no aggregate average to drag you down. For a psychologist or PhD scholar it is a checkpoint rather than a destination — the level that gets you working in Dutch while you aim at Programma II. Sixteen mock items below; answer, then read why. 🎯
B1 gets you working in Dutch. B2 gets you taken seriously in your field.
B2 is the working threshold for a clinician and a researcher: casusbesprekingen, supervision, ethics and consent, official letters that must be decoded rather than admired — and the language gate in the AKV-toets on the route to BIG-registratie. Volume four is written for precisely that.
