This volume is the working vocabulary of German clinical practice: the words, the sentence frames you will reuse for the rest of your career, and the register switch between what you write in the file and what you say to the person in front of you.

How to use it

Three things make clinical German different

You already have the grammar. What is missing is a small, closed set of habits — and closed sets are fast to learn.

1 · Two registers
Everything is said twice
Once in the nominal, passive, Latinate style of the file — Es besteht eine Anhedonie — and once in the concrete, second-person style of the room. Learn the pair, not the term.
2 · Frames, not sentences
Sixty phrases run a session
Opening, clarifying, reflecting, explaining, bounding, assessing risk, closing. Memorise them to the point of boredom so your attention stays on the patient, not on the syntax.
3 · Say it standing up
Silent reading fails here
Clinical language has to survive stress. Every day's task is spoken aloud, twice, and recorded once a week — the same principle as the plateau chapter in the psychology volume.
Not legal or clinical guidance. Wording for confidentiality, risk and insurer applications varies by Bundesland, Kammer and setting — check the local standard before using a frame in a real file.

Register

The file sentence and the room sentence

The left column is what you write and what colleagues say. The right column is what the patient actually understands. Being fluent here is the difference between correct German and good practice — say each pair aloud, left then right.

Bericht an den Gutachter, section by section

One model sentence per section, in the register the assessor expects: nominalised, impersonal, no adjectives of sympathy. Swap the content, keep the skeleton. Notice how often the participle attribute does the work — seit sechs Monaten bestehende Stimmung — the B2 structure that finally has a job.

After the 28 days

The paperwork around the language

Language is one of four gates. Knowing the names of the other three makes the German conversations about them much shorter — always confirm the current requirement with the relevant Landesbehörde or Kammer.

die Approbation
The licence to practise. For psychotherapists it follows the Psychotherapeutengesetz; for foreign qualifications it runs through Anerkennung (recognition) of your degree.
die Fachsprachprüfung
The professional-language exam: a simulated patient interview, a documentation task, and a colleague-to-colleague handover. This volume is built around those three tasks.
der Kassensitz
The panel-practice licence that lets you bill statutory insurers. Scarce and regionally capped — the vocabulary in the Klinik & System deck is what you need to negotiate around it.
