Founded in 1918 as the European Lunatic Asylum, CIP Ranchi is a legendary institution in South Asian psychiatry. Directly under the Government of India, CIP was revolutionary for being the first hospital in South Asia to institute an 'open-ward' policy—removing physical cages and chains in favor of humane community treatment.
