The MINDS Foundation: Eliminating Rural Mental Health Stigma in Western India

By Tanuj Suthar, Counselling Psychologist · 23 June 2026

Reviewing The MINDS Foundation's grassroots medical camps, school teacher training, and rural mental health worker models in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Clinical Assessment of The MINDS Foundation

Founded in 2010 by Dr. Pragya Agarwal and Raghu Appasani, The MINDS Foundation focuses on India's underserved rural populations in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Utilizing a grassroots model, MINDS trains local village health workers (similar to ASHA workers) to recognize early symptoms of depression, psychosis, and epilepsy. They organize recurring mobile psychiatric medical camps, providing free diagnosis, counseling, and medication directly in remote villages.
