The tiny planning trick with an outsized effect
If this,
then that

"I'll do it later" almost never survives contact with a real day. But a plan wired to a specific moment — if it's 9am and I'm at my desk, then I open the document — quietly gets done. Same intention, wildly different odds.

Why it works — it removes the decision

A vague goal makes you decide, in the moment, whether to act — and in the moment, mood usually wins. An if-then plan pre-decides it: you link a cue you'll actually meet to the action, so when the cue arrives, the action fires without a debate. It's one of the most reliable findings in applied psychology.

Write the plan,
not the wish

A good if is a cue you can't miss — a time, a place, a thing that already happens (after I pour my morning chai, when I sit in the auto). A good then is one small, specific action. Write three you'll start this week.

Now plan for the derailment

The bigger win is naming the obstacle in advance — the moment things usually fall apart — and pre-deciding your response. If [the thing that derails me], then [what I'll do instead].

Read them aloud twice. Saying the link out loud helps it stick. Then leave the sheet where the cue happens — on the desk, by the kettle, in your bag. The plan works where the moment does.

Evidence & the honest limit

STRONG — among the largest effects in the field. Honest caveat: it's measured on goal striving, and the literature has been criticised for publication bias, so the real effect is likely somewhat smaller. Untested in Indian samples. A self-help tool, not therapy.
